BCWH Cesarean Task Force: Initiatives and Achievements
– The First Two Years: 2010-2012

The BC Women’s Hospital (BCWH) Cesarean Task Force (CTF) is proud to announce the release of our report, BCWH Cesarean Task Force: Initiatives and Achievements – The First Two Years: 2010-2012.

The CTF was tasked by the PHSA in 2010 to implement key projects identified by both the Cesarean Birth Task Force and the Cesarean Birth in BC Consensus Conference, both held in 2008. The CTF launched the Power to Push (PTP) Campaign and Best Birth Clinic in September 2010, both to optimize the cesarean birth rate at BCWH, and to provide women and their families throughout the province with information about their childbirth options. This report outlines the development and implementation of the PTP Campaign and Best Birth Clinic.

In addition, the report includes outcomes on the effect these initiatives have had on the primary and overall cesarean rate, the VBAC rate and vaginal breech birth rate. At a time when cesarean rates have continued to rise, BCWH has seen the overall cesarean rate drop 3% since the campaign launch and the VBAC rate increase by almost 4%. As well, women traveled from around the province to have the opportunity to attempt a vaginal breech birth at BCWH. Obstetricians working in the Best Birth Clinic have had more than 600 consultant appointments with women from around the province.

The full report can be viewed in easy-to-read magazine-style format by clicking on the report’s cover page below. Then, click on any page or graphic to enlarge the type for easy reading. You can also download the report in PDF format here.

Through our website here, and on our Facebook and Twitter, women are talking about childbirth options and telling us that we are making a difference. Thanks to all the BCWH care providers and staff that have made the PTP Campaign and Best Birth Clinic a success.

The CTF is continuing to launch key initiatives in 2013. We will keep you posted!
